Influencing and Negotiating with Integrity

Aware of our background in using NLP to improve communication skills, Yorkshire Forward approached us to develop a 2 day programme designed to improve the influencing and negotiating skills of some of their people.

We developed, and delivered on multiple occasions, a programme containing a stimulating mix of theory and practice, of exploring models old and new and of trying out those models; it involved solo and group work; it took participants away from the workplace to acquire new knowledge and back into work to put the new Knowledge into Action in workplace influencing and negotiating situations.

The programme consisted of two separate days, separated by two weeks during which people practiced their new skills and reviewed how to become even more effective.

Day 1 – Influencing

Effective negotiators recognise that the action starts well before the formal “across the table” sessions, so we will spend a day exploring how to be more effective during the build up to the end-piece.

  • “That’s not what I meant” – an exercise in misunderstanding
  • The importance of Rapport reading body language (and its’ limitations)
  • Internal state control
  • Modelling great influencers – if they can do it the so can you?
    • How do they actually do it?
  • Introducing a Best Practice Model
  • How our Values affect our approach to negotiating
  • Really understanding your objective and that of your ‘other parties’

Day 2 – Negotiations

In this session we understand how to prepare for and execute effective face-to-face negotiations

  • Principles of effective negotiations
  • Objective setting in negotiations
  • Conflict resolution styles
  • Probing into what they are really saying
  • Taking the view from the “other side” - how to figure out what is important and what they might want
  • Using ‘soft language’ to bypass potential blockages
  • 10 Ways to be a better negotiator
