1st XI Manager Development

When you ask a group of committed individuals who have just been selected for a new development programme what to call it, is there any surprise that they want to be the “1 st XI”?

These junior managers and first line supervisors needed to upgrade the skills needed to deliver their existing roles and also to know more about the broader aspects of the business they worked in and how their activities affected each other. Drawing on internal expertise, we facilitated the design and delivery of a multi-faceted programme:

  • Design and delivery by internal experts of a series of workshops focussed around key internal functions
  • A “Foundation Programme” in some key aspects of managerial behaviour
    • Communications
    • Teamworking
    • Goal Setting
    • Time Management
    • Assertiveness
    • Supervisory Skills
  • Creation and operation of a small business as a learning vehicle
  • Individual involvement in business improvement projects
  • Routine review sessions with managers and a Sponsor Group of senior managers who oversaw the whole programme

No, not at the bookies, but members of the Sponsor Group helping with a personal feedback and review session at the end of the programme!

Steve Blower, one of the participants, said:

"For me, the MDP 1st XI programme has been a journey of exploration and discovery at both the personal and professional level.  Not only has it dramatically raised my self awareness, self confidence, self-esteem, and self-belief, but it has given me access to a huge amount of valuable and insightful information about the Company, and has allowed me to develop a tremendous network of colleagues and friends.  The finale of the programme is merely the end of the beginning."

The participants in the 1 st XI Programme have been awarded Diplomas by the Institute of Administrative Management, who accredited and recently featured the programme in their Journal.
