The Simple Explanation

At its’ simplest, Brain Gym is a program of physical movements that enhance learning and performance in ALL areas.

The activities are easy and enjoyable. They bring about rapid and often dramatic improvements in focus, comprehension, communication, organization, physical movement and achievement.

Brain Gym includes 26 easy and enjoyable targeted activities that integrate body and mind to bring about rapid and often dramatic improvements in:

  • concentration,
  • memory,
  • reading,
  • writing,
  • organizing,
  • listening,
  • physical coordination,
  • and more...
Brain Gym develops the brain's neural pathways the way nature does – through movement.

Brain Gym began in the 1970’s with the work of educators Dr. Paul Dennison and Gail E. Dennison. Originally, the Dennisons were seeking more effective ways to help children and adults who had been identified as “learning disabled.” They drew from a large body of research by developmental specialists who had been experimenting with using physical movement to enhance learning ability.

The Dennisons produced an innovative new approach to learning: the Brain Gym activities, and the field known as Education Kinesiology (Edu-K), “learning through movement.”

Today Brain Gym supports people of all abilities in making wide-ranging changes in their lives. Brain Gym is used in more than 80 countries and is taught in thousands of public and private schools worldwide and in corporate, performing arts, and athletic training programs.

The More Complete Version

On a more complex level it is a set of methodologies that integrate left and right brain approaches as well as enhancing connections between the reptilian, limbic and neocortex parts of the brain.

Brain Gym® enhances the development of neural pathways in the brain through movement, interconnecting the brain in several dimensions, allowing us to easily learn through all the senses, to remember what we learn, and to participate more fully in the events of our lives. Pupils are able to learn with less stress, and to express their creativity using more of their mental and physical potential. The movements also assist in clearing emotional stress that can affect us both mentally and physically. Reported benefits include improvements in such areas as vision, listening, learning, memory, self-expression, and coordination in children and adults. Teachers typically report improvements in attitude, attention, discipline, behaviour, and test and homework performance for all participants in the classroom.

Brain Gym® is a part of the Educational Kinesiology process.  It grew out of clinical studies started in 1969 by Paul E. Dennison, PhD., an educational therapist, who was looking for ways to help children and adults who had been identified as having learning difficulties.

At the time, it was already well established that babies and young children naturally perform what experts in early childhood education call developmental movements (for example a baby crawling develops connections between right and left hemispheres of the brain). These movements develop the neural connections in the brain, which are essential to learning.

Dr Dennison took this knowledge and that from other fields such as sports kinesiology, chiropractic, developmental optometry, yoga, etc. and adapted and enhanced the movements into a highly effective system, called Brain Gym®, to enhance the learning process and optimise the capabilities of each individual.

Brain Gym® can be used with individuals, classes and the whole school to enhance achievement and improve attention.

Our staged programme lets you start with a 1-day appreciation (which can be delivered as an Inset or as one of the offsite programmes), leading into a 4-day Foundation Course in Brain Gym® and on to cover certain specific areas in more depth.

The 26 simple exercises are copyrighted by the Educational Kinesiology Foundation and will only be taught by qualified Instructors.
